One of the key ways geocells affect soil compaction is through lateral restraint. When you just have loose soil, it has a tendency to spread out sideways under pressure. But when you put that soil inside a geocell, the walls of the geocell stop the soil from moving laterally. This means that when you apply a load on top of the soil - filled geocell, the soil particles are forced to pack closer together vertically.
Imagine you're trying to stack a pile of sand. Without anything to hold it in place, the sand will just slide down the sides. But if you put the sand inside a box, you can stack it higher and it will stay in place. That's exactly what geocells do for soil. They give the soil a structure to stay in, allowing for better compaction.
