How to Install a Window Screen on a Jalousie Window

Installing a window screen on a jalousie window (a window with parallel glass louvers that open and close simultaneously) can be challenging due to its unique operating mechanism. The most effective solution is a retractable or sliding screen that mounts on the interior side of the window.

These screens consist of a roll of fiberglass or aluminum mesh housed in a side-mounted cassette. The screen pulls across the window opening and attaches to a latch on the opposite side, providing a barrier when the window is open. To install, you typically mount the cassette housing to the window jamb using the provided screws. Then, attach the receiving latch on the opposite jamb. The screen can be pulled across and retracted as needed. Another option is a magnetic screen kit, where a frame of magnetic strips is attached to the window frame, and a mesh screen with corresponding magnetic strips snaps into place. This is a less permanent solution but works well for rental properties or for those seeking a DIY-friendly option. Both methods allow the jalousie louvers to operate freely while keeping insects out.
